KARYASHALA:
HIGH-END WORKSHOP
Biosecurity, Biosafety, Capacity and Capability Building: Working with Infectious Agents (BBCCB-2023)
About Workshop: Studying potentially
dangerous microbes in animal models require extra safety considerations.
Researchers must perform their work under careful restrictions of different
biosafety level laboratories. For research on viruses like SARS-COV2 and
bacteria like M. tuberculosis require Biosafety Level (BSL)-3 and Animal
BSL (ABSL)-3 laboratory capacity. However, in India, there are limited labs
with BSL/ABSL-3 lab capacities. This limitation has contributed to delays and
bottlenecks in preclinical COVID-19 research. The extraordinary demand for
COVID-19 preclinical research warrants the need to set up ABSL3 labs in various
parts of the country. Since, there are very few biosecurity labs in India,
particularly, we have shortage of trained/specialized manpower for working in
such facilities.
Objective:
The workshop is planned to provide specialized training to individuals and staff working with infectious agents in Biosafety Level-II/III and Animal Biosafety Level-II/III labs on concepts and practices of the biosafety and biosecurity.
Course curriculum of
training will cover areas of basic lab safety procedures, Regulatory guidelines
of DBT/BMBL/CDC/WHO/NIH/CPCSEA/IAEC, fundamentals of working safely with
infectious agents in biosafety cabinets, donning and doffing PPE,
transportation of materials, culture, equipment and animals in and out of Biosafety
Level-II/III and Animal Biosafety Level-II/III labs, proper disposal of
biohazardous waste, identification and control of hazards while working in these
facilities, working with laboratory animals, bio-methodological techniques,
viz. handling, injections/immunization, blood collection, anaesthesia,
euthanasia etc., pre and post-operative care, risk assessment and management,
Emergency procedures to be followed in biosafety labs, laboratory operations
and preventative maintenance, biosecurity etc.
