CSIR 78th Foundation Day Celebrations

26 - September - 2019

CSIR-IMTECH celebrated the 78th Foundation Day of its apex body, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) with a daylong programme held at its campus today including the signing of an important MoU with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar. The MoU will facilitate exchange of ideas, development of new knowledge, promote collaborative research and enhance high quality research acumen between the researchers and faculty of both the institutes. The objective of this collaboration is to carry out state of the art research in the areas of health care especially in projects and mission where both the institutes can significantly complement each other.

Presided over by Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, this year's Foundation Day Lecture was delivered by Prof. Sarit K. Das, Director, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar on "Microfluidics in Biological Research-An Engineer’s Perspective". Prof. Das presented the development and applications of two uniquely designed micro-fluidic platforms to study the effect of temperature and chemical concentration gradient on the functioning of microorganisms and body cells.  In his address, he outlined that the living bodies, from the smallest microorganisms to the most complex human bodies work in a stunning accuracy of fluidic and thermal interactions with the highest order of engineering precision. Thus, the development of micro-fluidics has enabled engineers to look at living systems from a quite different engineering approach compared to the classical biological approach
Dr. Manoj Raje, Director IMTECH while welcoming the guests and faculty to CSIR's Foundation day apprised audience with Institute’s achievements and said that IMTECH has been at the forefront of solving India’s unmet medical needs and has been at the forefront of drug discovery and technology generation. On signing MoU with IIT Ropar Dr Raje said “Two of the best institutes in disciplines of engineering and science have formally come together and I believe students and faculty from both the institutes will work towards development and implementation of collaborative research projects, professional development programs, and capacity-building efforts”.

Also present at the occasion was Dr. C. M. Gupta, Former Director, CSIR-IMTECH and Guest of Honor for this event in his address traversed down the memory lanes of his tenure at IMTECH in early years of its establishment and how institute has evolved over the years.
As part of the celebrations, CSIR-IMTECH also observed ‘Open Day’ during which school students, graduates and general public from in and around tricity visited the Institute and interacted with scientists to get a firsthand account of various facets of microbiology and biotechnology.. Institute also felicitated meritorious wards of its staff for their outstanding performances in various academic and extracurricular activities.
