CSIR Foundation Day Celebration

The CSIR - Institute Of Microbial Technology, Chandigarh celebrated CSIR, India Foundation Day on September 28th, 2018 with pomp, opening its doors to the public at large. The morning saw a steady throng of school and college students from Chandigarh as well as places from the neighboring region such as Khapurthala, Hussainpur, Bhisiana, Bhatinda, Ubhawal, Barnala, Longowal, Phagwara, Patiala, and Jalandhar. Visitors were shown some of the institutional facilities, including the microbial type culture collection (MTCC), the fermentation facility, the bioinformatics facility housing state-of-the-art computer servers, 3D virtual reality laboratory and 3D printing facility, the animal house and the BSL3 biosafety laboratory.

The CSIR Foundation Day celebration included a programme in the afternoon graced by esteemed Chief Guest, Prof. Jagat Ram, Director, PGIMER, Chandigarh. The programme began with Dr. Anil Koul, Director, CSIR-IMTECH welcoming Prof. Jagat Ram. Prof. Jagat Ram delivered a lecture on the topic “Global Health - Challenges and Opportunities”, enlightening the audience about communicable and non-communicable diseases. He also praised the research efforts at IMTECH and complimented Dr. Koul for his role in the development of new TB drug, Bedaquiline. He exhorted the students and scientists to adopt a team approach in order to make impactful discoveries in the area of medicine, and welcomed the Ayushman Bharat programme announced by the Government of India.

The lecture was followed by felicitation of winners of quiz and essay contests held for CSIR Foundation day, and recognition of the contributions of recent retirees of CSIR-IMTECH. A dazzling student talent display followed that included poetry recitation, TED-style talks, presentation of science comic art and amateur photography. The event concluded with Vote of Thanks by the Director, IMTech.
