Title: Innovation in India: Lessons from my personal experiences

Abstact: Twenty five years ago, when I entered drug discovery space in private sector, the field was quite new to Indian scientists, regulators, businessmen and funding agencies too. We explored several innovative ways while addressing difficulties in complex drug discovery and development process, some of them were non-conventional and few were even “Indian Jugaad". But it was a great learning process. During this time, I have met many young students/researchers; some of them exceptionally bright and hard working but risk avert. To motivate them to take higher risk was a challenging task. In last five years, India has taken several steps to promote innovation in India, right from school level to address daunting challenges in front of the country. In this talk, I will narrate my personal experiences as a drug discovery scientist, manager and leader, strengths and weaknesses of Innovation ecosystem in India and how the government is trying to nurture innovation in the country
