About Imtech

CSIR-Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH), established in 1984, is one of the youngest among the 37 national laboratories of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research. The institute was set-up to be the fore-runner in the niche domain of microbial biotechnology and to provide leadership in the microbial research in the country.

With a team of more than 55 scientists and more than 300 technical staff, postdoctoral researchers and graduate students and state of the art facilities across different areas of modern biotechnology CSIR-IMTECH has developed strong credibility both in industry and academia through its basic and application oriented research. The institute has catered to several industries through technology development, licensing of technologies and providing research support and services.

About Workshop

The workshop is aimed to familiarize the participants with the integrated and interdisciplinary approaches required in the designing and development of bioprocess technology. Worldwide development of bio-based, environmentally benign technology is largely hampered by the lack of expertise having knowledge in the development, establishment, functioning and operation of bioprocessing industries. The course for the workshop is uniquely design to give knowledge intensive practical based training on bioprocess development.

Workshop Dates : 05th March, 2018 to 16th March, 2018

Focus Areas

The course will be focused on the following areas:

  • Basics of bioprocess development (including screening of potential microorganisms, microbial growth kinetics and media handling)
  • Bioreactor designing
  • Basics of fermentation
  • Basics of Down-stream processing
  • Solid liquid separation
  • Cell disruption
  • Membrane Processes
  • Laboratory and Process Scale Chromatography
  • Bioprocess scale up
  • Bioprocess integration and process economics
  • Regulatory aspects of fermentation based products/processes.

Lectures will be delivered by the experts from the academia and industries. The workshop will also focus on skill development by pertaining hands on training under the guidance of the experienced faculties and technicians.

Targeted Participants

The content of the workshop has been designed to benefit the professionals (and future professionals) from the academia and the industries, persons working or intend to work in close connection with the industries. Recent Ph.Ds in the Bioprocess Technology and related fields, M.Sc., M.Tech. and  B.Tech students along with industry personnel shall be specially benefitted from the course.

About BERPDC

Biochemical Engineering Research and Process Development Center (BERPDC), was established in 1986 in the CSIR-Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH) Chandigarh. It is one of India’s largest and most sophisticated centres for research in technology development, process optimization and scale up in the field of biochemical engineering. The centre is equipped with state of the art facilities to carry out cutting edge research in the area of fermentation technology and is backed by excellent analytical facilities. The computerized pilot plant, for complete scale up and optimization is among the best of its type in India.

The main objectives of BERPDC are to do research and provide services to the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. This unit of IMTECH has developed and transferred technology on biochemical processes and biopharmaceuticals like natural streptokinase, recombinant streptokinase, recombinant staphylokinase, urokinase, thermotolerent yeast for alcohol production, alkaline protease, alpha amylase etc. Few of those technologies have already been commercialized.

The facility is well equipped with upstream and downstream processing units and various utilities for production of high value/ low volume and low volume/ high value products. It has been used for development of protein therapeutics (e.g., recombinant streptokinase and recombinant staphylokinase), enzymes (e.g., α-amylase, alkaline proteases, laccase, xylanase), bioactives (cerulomycin, antimicrobial peptides) and other chemicals/ biochemicals (ethanol, pullulan, bacteriorhodopsin, sophrolipids) and offered to other academic and industrial clients for bioprocess optimization and scale up and production of therapeutic proteins for toxicology studies and clinical trials.
